Crackdown on Unlicensed Contracting

Jul 12, 2017 -- Posted by : ajpereira

In February 2017, the News Press published an article regarding unlicensed contractors. The city of Cape Coral has stepped up its crackdown on unlicensed contracting. The City of Cape Coral now has a direct way for citizens to report unlicensed contractors and construction work that is being done without a permit. The phone number is 239-242-3783 and the email is [email protected].

"Work performed by unlicensed contractors do not have proper permits and the work is not inspected to ensure compliance with state building codes, which can affect the safety and welfare of homeowners." Code Manager Richard Carr said in a news release. "Unfortunately, the homeowner is the one who is liable for the additional cost associated with bringing shoddy, non-permitted work up to code."

That means that you may end up paying twice for the work if it is done by an unlicensed contractor or is completed without a permit. It may also leave you liable for damages caused by the shoddy work. If your home burns down because of unlicensed electrical work, your insurance company is unlikely to pay the claim, for example.

Consumers can check myfloridalicense.com to see if a contractor has the appropriate licensing or call the City's Licensing Division at 239-574-0613 to verify city and state licensing for contractors.

If you are located in the Lee County/Fort Myers area, you can call 239-533-8895. On Sanibel, you may call 239-472-4555. And in Collier County, the main number is 239-252-2431 and the after hours complaint line is 239-252-5607
